REST

1995-1998
Rotterdam

REST is a project developed with Jeanne van Heeswijk and Hans Snoek. REST wants to make room for encounters that 'move in between'. REST addresses what has been left behind, excluded or not developed within the existing constellation. REST imagines a place where traditional hierarchies and relationships in and out of the field of the arts can be broken down, so that new meanings can arise and develop. The underlying idea is that REST regards no one aspect of our culture as more meaningful or important than another. It investigates different points of views, magnifies what seems to be too small, illuminates what has been in the dark.
REST does not want to have the final word, so it creates spaces for other words. It invites co-operators, not necessarily from the art world, who are given the space to show their motives, their drive.

Each co-operator may, during a certain period of time, invite other co-operators and make proposals. REST will stimulate and support its guests to the best of its ability: it creates the necessary space, offers its energy and will try to make the impossible possible.

Among those who have worked with REST are Arno van Roosmalen (curator), Anna Harding (head of Goldsmith College, London), Tys Goldschmidt (writer, biologist), Bartomeu Mari (director of Witte de With, Rotterdam) with whom we wrote Pizza Talk and Lynda Morris (curator of EAST International and Norwich Gallery, Norwich), TorkRadio (London), Ruud Kaulingfreks (philosopher of Arts, Erasmus University and Eindhoven Academy of Design, writer). REST also interfered in the Arena of Rita McBride in Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, with a public discursive event.
