Duende. co-initiators and active members

Artist run space, Rotterdam
Duende was an independent self-organized artist-cooperative located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In forty-two studios housed in a former school, independent artists carried out their practices on a professional basis. Besides running the permanent studios, Duende organised many exhibitions and events. Duende also offered an intense residency program, providing three large studios, living accommodation and exhibition, available for international and Dutch artists for a period of three months. Duende’s board changed every year from the premisse that every member would at least once take on their role as being responsible for the collective and to learn and share skills that also informed and were informed by their own practice. Duende was also actively involved in the Atelieroverleg (1990s) that brought all Rotterdam artist-run spaces together to be stronger politically, to convince the city of the necessity of art, culture and artists in a city, for a healthy, resilient civic eco-system.
Duende existed form 1984 until 2013.
