So happy and honored that Art + Water in San Francisco will display this extraordinary piece, and that the final stage of Take Part will eventually, somehow, materialize as we imagined, as a dream coming true.
Thanks to Art+water and Stella Lochman the complete San Francisco Scale Model will be on public display in its entirety for the first time in more than 80 years.
Beginning this winter at Pier 29, visitors will be able to experience all 125 sections of the extraordinary WPA-built model together for the first time since 1942.
The model reflects many of the values that guide our work: public access, civic imagination, education, craftsmanship, and a belief that culture belongs to everyone. Just as hundreds of craftspeople came together to build the model nearly ninety years ago, this model will become a place where artists, students, neighbors, and visitors come together to imagine the future of San Francisco.
As Stella Lochman puts it, “This Model is an artifact of imagination. It gives every San Franciscan, and every visitor, a chance to take in their city and dream about what it was and what it can be.”
